The Leader’s Mission
Today I was moving quickly through the tweets of people I admire and respect in the field of leading change. One of them caught my eye. “The leader’s mission is to provide clarity and direction out of complexity and confusion” I had one of those “hmmm” moments, and I’m not sure I agree with that. It is however, a good start!
The statement isn’t wrong – but it can be much more powerful. The leader’s mission is to support, encourage and guide their team(s) to explore, research and have powerful conversations about the complexity and confusion in their organization and/or industry. It is the team, to which the leader belongs, that creates clarity, focus and direction based on the common purpose of the organization. With full and complete communication of that clarity, focus and direction, all members of the organization are brought into the conversation, and alignment is created.
The leader has not provided anything other than the culture that supports innovation, creativity, and employees that feel respected, heard and valued.
